Chamberlain TM is proud to be Muskoka's leading
supplier of roof underlayment products, and we're here to help you find the perfect fit for your project. What is Roofing Underlayment and Why Do I Need It?
Roof underlayment creates a vital secondary barrier against water infiltration. Shingles are great at shedding water, but wind-driven rain, ice dams, and imperfections can allow water to seep underneath. Underlayment prevents this by providing an extra layer of protection.
Key Functions of Roofing Underlayment:
- Protects against wind-driven rain, ice dams, and leaks.
- Creates a secondary water barrier.
- (If applicable) Allows your roof deck to breathe and evaporate moisture.
Understanding Wet Underlayment: Roofing underlayment is water-resistant, designed to handle unexpected moisture. It sheds water away from the roof deck and allows it to evaporate. However, prolonged exposure to large amounts of water can damage some underlayments. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for installation and extended exposure.
Roof Underlayment vs. House Wrap: Both underlayment and house wrap provide weather protection for your home, but they have different purposes. House wrap is specifically designed for walls, with features like breathability to allow moisture vapor to escape. Roofing underlayment may not have these properties and might not be up to code for walls.
Stapling vs. Nailing Underlayment: Stapling is an acceptable method for installing some types of roofing underlayment, but it's always best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Nails are another common method.
